News Update from Pornoland!!!

August is usually a quiet time of year in the porn world, but this month is really full of stories. Lots of stuff crosses my desk, much of which I can't talk about because I don't want to get all the other studio heads pissed off at me, but sometimes I just can't resist. Here are some of the bits and pieces I have been hearing about over the past weeks:

Item One: GRUNTS MAY BE THE MOVIE OF THE YEAR

Now that Team Raging Stallion is back in the office and can reflect on the thirty or so scenes shot for GRUNTS, the general consensus is that this project may very well be a strong contender for Movie of the Year. We recently decided to move the release date from January to December to qualify for this year's awards cycle. GRUNTS is by far the biggest porn project in the past five years, and the footage looks like it may be the best Raging Stallion has ever produced. Watch everywhere for news on this movie over the next 6 months.

Item Two: Established Retails Shops Going Under

News will be hitting in a few weeks that some major porn stores will be going out of business soon. The biggest of these is Movie Gallery, which boasts some 4,000 plus stores. They have not been big porn buyers lately, but word in XBiz magazine is that they are in real financial difficulty. Smaller shops around the nation are also on the verge of going under owing to the growth of internet delivery systems and the usual summer slowdown. August is like the Sargasso sea for porn shops--if a company is going out of business, it usually happens in August when income from customers is at a yearly low.

Item Three: RSS Increases Production

While DVD sales continue to fall for most porn companies, Raging Stallion boasted another milestone in July--it was the second largest month in the company's history with DVD sales hitting record numbers. To keep up with the rapidly growing demand for Raging Stallion product, production has been increased so that starting August 1 the studio will be on a 50 movie per year release schedule--one movie every week. For the fall schedule there are no planned releases for Thanksgiving or Christmas weeks. Other than these two holidays, RSS will put out a film every seven days for the rest of the year.

Dear Chris Ward, I am a Taiwanese who loves the film made by Raging Stallion. I totally agree with your point about DVD package, front cover and back cover should made and printed good-looking and make consumer wants to buy it. I am not meaning outward means everything but meanwhile it should not be ignored. Me myself love Japanese products because their products are so beautiful, amazing and sophisticated. For an example, I love to buy foreign musician's CD in Japan. Because they translate foreign language so well and their print industry are also incredible. Nowadays, selling CD, DVD are becoming more and more tough and hard because of pirated edition, Internet downloading and personal computer. I think all we have to do is make our products more attractive and more competitive.

Interesting stuff. I think the reason a lot of high-end studios are having difficulty is because of the lack in marketing. There is a huge market out there and a great deal of it can be reached free of charge via the internet, but you rarely see some of these studios take advantage of it. The little guy is calling the shots now with the uprising of blogs, adult video sharing, and adult profile sites, and sadly most studios feel they are too good for these outlets.

This is the first time that I have read a blog and felt the need to comment.

Many of the subjects that you cover are really thought provoking and current to what the world around us faces.

From the changing landscape of the distribution via the inter-net coupled with the loss of revenue to store owners challenging their position and most likely their ability to stay in the game. And now porn (gay or str8) has become more mainstream then ever thought that it could be. Not too long ago the porn industry was thought to be nothing more than a sick and perverted endeavor on all accounts. Not anymore.

First and foremost it is a business that generates large sums of money. If you are uncertain of this just visit Chatsworth CA. Many of those homes I am told are owned by people who are involved in the business.

In today's market - producers must think in terms of the viewing public and the creative dynamics that keep them a customer. This is underscored with the budgets for production and forecasted return. And don't think that the day to day cost of a production company is cheap - it is all overhead.

Welcome to the new age of rolling a buck.

I work in feature films and so much of what you have stated in your blog made me see that the two are not that dissimilar to one another anymore. The bottom-line in Hollywood is simple - "did we make money." And I am sure the same holds true for this industry. Otherwise you would not be in business.

I always ask if we can afford the artistic nature of the script before I get behind a project. And from the sound of it you must do the same.

I want to thank you for the blog - very interesting and informative. I never thought that I would comment on a porn blog - but I felt it was needed simply because of the good work and business that you and the others have done.

Porn no longer is a dirty word. It's a high volume business.

Best -

Mac
