Chris Ward Responds to Violence Controversy Surrounding To The Last Man
See the Controversial Trailer

When I returned from my vacation I was surprised to see a number of emails complaining about the "extreme violence" in our upcoming movie To The Last Man. Although many customers, blog posters, and reviewers are excited about this film and its contents, many have voiced serious concern about a merging of sex and violence. Some have made outright nasty comments to me about this film, even though no one outside our studio staff has seen it. Evidently, To The Last Man is not a politically correct film.
It is true that To The Last Man is a very violent movie. It is a Western epic, as true to a Hollywood blockbuster as gay porn will ever be. Ben Leon, Tony Dimarco, and I decided that we wanted to make a real Western movie--not some cheesy porno rip-off as has been made in the past. We shot on location in Arizona, used real horses, real guns, hired some real cowboys to be in the cast--in short, we spent lots of time, money, and energy to be as authentic as possible. In this spirit we made the decision to stay true to the Western genre--which requires violence. The Old West was a very violent place--on the ranch where the movie was filmed, there was a graveyard with a memorial to everyone who had died on the property. The monument listed how each person was killed: one man was killed by Indians up at the river; another person had been shot in a drunken fight at a saloon; still another died of injuries from a fist fight; the best one was the guy who died in a "horse wreck." No one in the graveyard lived past about 40 years of age.
Today Hollywood films are rife with violence--it is part of modern entertainment. To The Last Man looks to the examples of the Coen Brothers and Tarantino. It's not a porn movie from the 1990s nor is it Little Miss Sunshine. It’s a film for the 21st century and it reflects the entertainment values of 2008.
Having said this, we agree that the connection between sex and violence is problematic. None of us condone killing. None of us get off on rape. Because of this we have provided on each and every disc a fully non-violent version of the movie. In this "all sex / no violence edit" we have removed all killings, all beatings, all rape scenes, and any other thing that might be offensive to some viewers. In short, To The Last Man can be enjoyed by viewers who like violence and by viewers who are repulsed by it.
Several images from the movie have been singled out for criticism. One of these is the rape scene that comes near the end of part two of the film. I asked Ben Leon to offer his thoughts on filming such a controversial scene: "When we wrote the script I didn't give the rape scene a second thought. Once we were on set my impressions changed a bit given the intensity of violence that a rape requires. I really questioned the validity of filming a rape in the context of a movie that is meant to turn people on. Chris, Tony and I sat down and talked about it quite a bit and I felt after further consideration that the rape scene fit well into the narrative structure and into the lives of the characters we created. I still think that it is appropriate to question this decision, but in the end the movie comes to a violent climax that fits perfectly into the story."
Tony Dimarco, who was head writer on the project, told me this about the violence controversy: "I felt it was important to include violence in this film. In the Western genre, violence is what usually drives and or punctuates the story. Have you ever seen a Western without a single gun or anyone getting shot? If you have rival factions you are bound to have major conflict and this starkly contrasts the romantic aspect of this film. And speaking of romance, even in the most famous romance story of all time--Romeo and Juliet--in the end the lovers die. Writing a story of this nature is very complicated. In many cases the opposing sides need to have sex. All the scenes couldn’t be romantic interludes between enemies. That would be ridiculous. Forced sex made sense for the plot. I have to say that the rape scene is more brutal than I had imagined it, but there’s nothing pretty about rape. I think that there will be people who are shocked and opposed to this scene, but I’m quite sure that there will be an audience for it as well. Although people will deny it publicly there are many people who do have a rape fantasy. This film and all porn films exploit the fantasies of the viewers."
It is our hope that people understand that To The Last Man is a porn movie like no other. Nothing like this has ever been made in our industry. It sets a new benchmark for production values, for scriptwriting, for acting, and for pure over-the-top sex. It is easy to go out there and make the same old suck and fuck movie over and over again, but to do something new and original takes time and effort. I hope that porn lovers enjoy this movie for what it is--a major film that goes where porn has never gone before.

Chris,
Thank you for making this statement.
In my write up about the movie I did liken it to a Coen Brothers film based on the trailer I had seen. It amazes me that people decry the violence in a porn movie when some engage in such behaviors behind closed doors. It goes without saying that rape is a vicious act that has nothing to do with sex. Rape is about power and in the context of the movie, which is about warring factions, having such a scene for authenticity sake of the genre does seem necessary. Did people complain when Bruce Willis was raped in "Pulp Fiction?" Porn movies have got to be elevated to the next level if the medium is to survive in the new market the industry seems headed. I wish the whole Raging Stallion team the best with this effort.
I posted the trailer yesterday http://dewayneinsd.blogspot.com/2008/10/to-last-man.html
and was blithely unaware some porn fans have been highly offended by the "Violence" in To The Last Man.
I guess some porn fans do not care to mix their "Sex and Violence" Of course we are talking a Porn Film here and while the Sex is real the violence is fake. This is not new to porn 2 years ago Falcon released The Velvet Mafia which featured gunplay and a nasty shooting.
Interesting to note in Europe mainstream film is near-pornographic in depiction of sex while Violence is a taboo. While in America Porn i.e. Sex is till treated as something we must shield the kiddies from.
Any American teenager has seen worse than what has been depicted In The Last Man. Including the rape scene, and while I might not particular care for a realistic rape scene in a porn film, I'll reserve judgment until the movie is released.
And this is why I am excited about To The Last Man its a Movie with Porn scenes a Hybrid all too rare nowadays. The Porn Film.
Mr. Ward -
From the looks of it, "To The Last Man" is one step shy of a snuff film.
Your rationale for including violence because it's "required" is juvenile, akin to a teenager wanting to get a nose ring because "everybody is getting one." Nonsense. As a "filmmaker" you're responsible for the choices you make. Gay men do not want to witness more reminders of hatred and violence, especially in the porn we view.
"To The Last Man" should be marketed as fetish material, not a mainstream release.
I certainly don't wish this film well and hope that the top-line gay porn reviewers see this flick for what it is - a truly pornographic and hateful portrayal of humanity.
I suggest you revisit the controversy over the movie "Cruising" and why the gay community was so outraged. With so much hatred and violence in the world, we don't need, nor do we want to have this kind of garbage encroaching on our erotic fantasy life.

Hey Chris,
I have to commend you and your crew for putting out a film that does what the future of porn will aim to be. Gay porn has a huge pool of talent, that at the present moment, is hugely wasted. Heterosexual porn has acknowledged that it's viewers want more action and adventure, realistic dialogue and situations in the films they spend their hard earned money. Posssibly, Chris Ward and Raging Stallion, as a few of the competition like Michael Lucas with some of his films like 'Dolce Vita' with the suspense and drama as well as the 'Intern' with its comic angle are part of a wave of Gay Porn Cinema that is long overdue. Wash West's 'Hole' and 'Nake Highway' seemed to be the first hint that porn could be more than just a jerk off medium. These films are a challange to do more.
From the possible viewpoint of producers, one would think a push for more films of the like would be profitible. Films like these could be editide to a soft core version which could be shopped to Here or Logo for airing. Profits from commercial airing on these cable networks could not only bring cash to the producers, but also fund production for future films.
So, this film 'To the Last Man' has elements of "extreme violence", but it's part of the nature of storytelling. And I'm certain, like more porn, if one doesn't want to see the violent scenes, one can just skip past it, just as one would do if they don't want to watch boring dialogue. So, I'm happy that Chris Ward and company aren't backing down with the production and distribution of this film. Can't wait to see it.

What a bunch of #$%...if none of you "get off on rape" then it has no place in this movie. And to compare yourself to Tarantino and the Coehns is a more than a little bit of a stretch.
I watched the clip and read the letter and can't wait to see the film when it's debuted. It looks extremely creative and erotic. Sure, different things will appeal to different people, but thankfully, we live in a world where these videos can be made and where the market will ultimately decide their success or failure.
SOY LATINOAMERICANO,
VI EL TRAILER DE LA PELICULA Y ME PARECIO EXELENTE,YA ES HORA Q EL CINE GAY TOME OTRO RUMBO EN CUANTO ACCION,PORNO Y ENTRETENEMINETO SE REFIERE.
ESTE CORTE DE PELICULAS ES INCREIBLE Y SE QUE TENDRA LA MEJOR ACOJIDA DEL PUBLICO GAY Y NO GAY.
SALUDOS.
OPCIONALMENTE CADA QUIEN OBSERVA LO QUE QUIERE Y LA VIOLENCIA Y EL ASESINATO NO ES ALGO NUEVO PARA NADIE SE CONVIVE CON ELLO
The quality of the film looks amazing ,but from that trailer seems that extreme violence is now link to sex ,wich is a horrible idea to put in people's heads,we have enough with was is going around us,hope you learn from this and the next film will keep the same quality specially in the acting wich looks really good!
In the end, all this controversy highlighted the movie and now there's a lot of people - including me - that is waiting to watch the movie. I think it's a brave attitude and I totally agree with new developments and concepts to a porn scene. Fuck and suck it's ok, but it's kind of lazy. Congrats for your work.
Just the fact that you're only publishing positive, affirming comments about your film says it all, Mr. Ward.
Please forgive me for being a wet blanket, but I have to disagree with the comments here. While there is no denying a great deal of effort was put into the production, I do believe this film will boomerang on you. After seeing this trailer, I understand now that you boys at RSS are frustrated Hollywood auteurs. I can applaud your desire to make something "more". However, I ask you to think of your customer base. Your customers do not want to see a porn film involving a graphically portrayed throat slitting. Your customers to not want to see a graphic lynching. Your customers don't want to see a graphic rape depiction.
Now, you say that regular Westerns show things like this, but this is not a regular Western--this is a gay adult video. The violence level in this film is geared toward a demographic that cannot legally watch the film, and doesn't have the inclination to watch the film--15-24 year old heterosexual males. I have a strong feeling that while you may have created a good story, men do not watch skin flicks for story, and that this film will not meet commercial expectations RSS may have set for it. In a world where the traditional studios are rapidly losing market share and revenues to strictly online houses like Sean Cody & Randy Blue, can RSS really afford to be taking financial gambles like this?
Just a couple of thoughts....
Anon Raging Stallion is the ONLY porn studio that can afford this risk,,which must have been handsomely rewarded with Grunts.
I think this film WILL appeal to the 18-24 demographic which you are correct is not now BUYING porn.
THEY will not bat an eye at the violence only the older PC crowd will cringe.
Its called taking a chance and while 200K seems huge on the Hollywood budget scale this is an Indie film.
If "To The Last Man" is anything like "The Drifter" I will love it. Story porn will work if done right!
Logan McCree in my opinion is the reason Chris is taking a chance here, he is an amazing and unique performer, with a sensuality unmatched by 98% or pornsters!
In response to the first post, Bruce Willis didn't get raped in Pulp Fiction. Ving Rhames did.
Gentlemen,
Welcome to the 21st Century! I for one will be waiting anxiously for the films release. As Chris ahs pointed out there will be 2 versions of the film released, excellent marketing ploy. Having been in the leather/ levi and cowboy communities for over 30 years it is amazing how cheap some of the porn of earlier years can be. More and More fetish is becoming main stream as is leather and western gear on gay men. Westerns are built on land grabbing and the journey west. Water rights were just as violent as the cowboy and indian wars. But remember that this movie of gay men against gay men is still differenet than gays vs straights. If you don't like what you see then don't buy the film. I for one will be letting my leather and cowboy friends who are into guns and leather know about it. AND where they can get it.
Mike Angel
It's funny how diffeent people will react differently to what they see. I'm not one who embraces over violent films, but this is a western and - seeing the trailer - the two things that came to my mind was that for once 1) this looked like a movie who had a story of its own instead of just pushing sex scenes back to back ; 2) that it seemed well acted by performers who had clear eyes instead of being drugged out of their wits. So I will fast-forward through the violence if I can't take it for personally, the vision of men with their cocks pierced all over is a lot more disgusting to me, lol.
Aggression, and heightened emotions can make sex hotter. Passion and certain emotions make sex hotter. Whether they be Anger, Happiness, or just being perverted etc.(Perversion is an emotion right?;) Ever had hot make up sex after an arguement? Ever been so worked up or pissed of that you need to fuck something to feel better? There's a lot of testosterone in this movie. People like to watch men FUCK, sometimes when you combine that with some aggression or passion you have a more cum blowing experience.
C'est La Vie,
Mike Muscles
that looks horrible. stick to porn, hard core sex and leave "film making" to MGM. way too violent.
Mike Muscles get what your saying leaving a protest Friday night in San Diego (Prop H8) I saw two young men who looked like they were in a hurry to get home,,they had been two of the loudest at the rally.
I said to them "You two are going to have Great Protest Sex!"
The one guy didn't understand but his partner grinned and said "yeah were pumped!"
To The Last Man like Grunts is Testosterone Overload!
In a world of Political Correctness can't we be a little UN PC in our fantasies?
This is what we are talking about
A violent sex fantasy.
Nothing more
I saw both trailers for this movie and I think its an amazing piece of work...I hope it's coming out of blue-ray..both trailers kept my eyes glued to the screen. It's very Raunchy and also very hard-hitting and it's something new and different. I for one will be very happy to buy this film to add to my collection.
